Vaiśampāyana said: O king! Having been thus addressed, Kuntī told Pāṇḍu, bull among the Kuru-s, lord of the earth and her husband,
वैशम्पायन ने कहा: हे राजा! इस प्रकार संबोधित किये जाने पर कुन्ती ने पाण्डु, जो कि कुरुवंश का बैल है, पृथ्वी के स्वामी तथा अपने पति हैं, से कहा,
"O one who is learned in the law! O one with eyes like those of a blue lotus! You should not speak in this way to me. I am your wife under the law and am always devoted to you.
"हे कानून के विद्वान! हे नीले कमल के समान नेत्रों वाले! तुम्हें मुझसे इस प्रकार बात नहीं करनी चाहिए। कानून के अनुसार मैं तुम्हारी पत्नी हूं और सदैव तुम्हारे प्रति समर्पित हूं।"
O mighty-armed one! O descendant of the Bhārata lineage! According to dharma, you should yourself father valourous sons on me.
हे महाबाहु! हे भरत वंश के वंशज! धर्म के अनुसार तुम्हें स्वयं मेरे लिये वीर पुत्र उत्पन्न करने चाहिये।
O tiger among men! I will go to heaven with you. O descendant of the Kuru lineage! You should unite with me to obtain offspring.
हे मनुष्यों में बाघ! मैं तुम्हारे साथ स्वर्ग जाऊँगा। हे कुरु वंश के वंशज! संतान प्राप्ति के लिए तुम्हें मेरे साथ मिल जाना चाहिए।
Not even in my thoughts will I go to any other man but you. Which man on earth is superior to you?
मैं अपने ख़्याल में भी तुम्हारे सिवा किसी और मर्द के पास नहीं जाऊँगी। पृथ्वी पर कौन सा मनुष्य तुमसे श्रेष्ठ है?

हे विशाल नेत्रों वाले! हे हृदय में धर्म रखने वाले! पुराणों से यह कथा सुनो। मैंने यह सुना है और अब मैं इसे आपके लिए सुना रहा हूं।
"In ancient times, it is said that there was a king by the name of Vyuṣitāśva. He extended the Pūru lineage and was extremely righteous.
"प्राचीन काल में, ऐसा कहा जाता है कि व्युशिताश्व नाम का एक राजा था। उसने पुरु वंश का विस्तार किया और अत्यंत धर्मात्मा था।
The gods with Indra and the devarṣi-s came to a sacrifice that this mightyarmed and righteous one performed.
इन्द्र और देवर्षियों सहित देवता उस यज्ञ में आये जिसे इस शक्तिशाली और धर्मात्मा ने सम्पन्न किया।
At the sacrifice of the great-souled rājarṣi Vyuṣitāśva, Indra was intoxicated with somā juice and the Brāhmana-s with their fees.
महान आत्मा वाले राजर्षि व्युशिताश्व के यज्ञ में, इंद्र सोम रस से और ब्राह्मण अपनी फीस से नशे में थे।
O king! Thereafter, Vyuṣitāśva was radiant beyond everything on earth, beyond all living beings and even beyond the sun, after dew has fallen.
हे राजा! इसके बाद, व्युशिताश्व पृथ्वी पर सभी चीज़ों से परे, सभी जीवित प्राणियों से परे और यहां तक कि ओस गिरने के बाद सूर्य से भी परे दीप्तिमान था।

At this great horse sacrifice, the powerful Vyuṣitāśva, with the strength of ten elephants, became the king of all other kings.
इस महान अश्व यज्ञ में, दस हाथियों की शक्ति वाला शक्तिशाली व्युशिताश्व अन्य सभी राजाओं का राजा बन गया।
Those who know the Pūraṇa-s sing a verse - 'Vyuṣitāśva has conquered the entire earth till the boundaries of the ocean. He protects all the vārṇa-s, just as a father protects his own sons.'
जो लोग पुराण को जानते हैं वे एक श्लोक गाते हैं - 'वुशिताश्व ने समुद्र की सीमाओं तक पूरी पृथ्वी को जीत लिया है। वह सभी वर्णों की रक्षा करता है, जैसे एक पिता अपने पुत्रों की रक्षा करता है।'

He performed many great sacrifices and gave riches to the Brāhmana-s. Collecting jewels, he later performed great sacrifices. Extracting a lot of somā juice, he performed the sacrifice known as somāsanstha.
उन्होंने कई महान यज्ञ किये और ब्राह्मणों को धन दिया। रत्न एकत्रित करके बाद में उन्होंने बड़े-बड़े यज्ञ किये। बहुत सारा सोम रस निकालकर उन्होंने सोमसंस्था नामक यज्ञ किया।
O lord of men! His beloved wife was named Bhadrā, the daughter of Kākṣīvat. Because of her beauty, she was unparalleled on earth.
हे मनुष्यों के स्वामी! उनकी प्रिय पत्नी का नाम भद्रा था, जो काक्षीवत की पुत्री थीं। अपने सौन्दर्य के कारण वह पृथ्वी पर अद्वितीय थी।
It has been heard that they desired each other a lot and addicted by desire for her, he became a victim of consumption.
सुनने में आया है कि वे एक-दूसरे को बहुत चाहते थे और उसकी चाहत में वह नशे का शिकार हो गया।
After some time, he went away like the setting sun. When that king of men died, his wife was afflicted with grief.
कुछ देर बाद वह डूबते सूरज की तरह चला गया। जब मनुष्यों के उस राजा की मृत्यु हो गई, तो उसकी पत्नी दुःख से पीड़ित हो गई।

नारी परमधर्मज्ञ सर्वा पुत्रविनाकृता पतिं विना जीवति या न सा जीवति दुःखिता
O, supreme among those who know dharma! A woman without sons lives a life of misery, if she lives without her husband.
हे धर्म को जानने वालों में श्रेष्ठ! पुत्रहीन स्त्री यदि अपने पति के बिना रहती है तो उसे दुख का जीवन व्यतीत करना पड़ता है।
O bull among the Kṣatriya-s! Without her husband, it is better for a woman to be dead. Please take me with you. I wish to go where you are going.
हे क्षत्रियों में से बैल! पति के बिना स्त्री का मर जाना ही बेहतर है। कृपया मुझे अपने साथ ले जाएं। मैं वहीं जाना चाहता हूं जहां आप जा रहे हैं.
Without you, I will not be able to bear life for an instant. O king! Show your grace to me and take me quickly away.
तुम्हारे बिना मैं एक क्षण भी जीवन नहीं सह पाऊँगा। हे राजा! आप मुझ पर कृपा करें और मुझे शीघ्र ही यहाँ से ले जायें।

O tiger among men! I will always do that which is pleasurable for you.
हे मनुष्यों में बाघ! मैं सदैव वही करूँगा जो तुम्हारे लिये सुखदायी हो।
O king! I will always follow you like a faithful shadow and will always be obedient towards you.
हे राजा! मैं एक वफादार छाया की तरह सदैव तुम्हारे साथ रहूँगा और सदैव तुम्हारा आज्ञाकारी रहूँगा।
O king! O one with the eyes of a lotus! From now, a disease that dries up the heart will overcome me, since I will be separated from you.
हे राजा! हे कमल की आँखों वाले! अब से, हृदय को सुखा देने वाली एक बीमारी मुझ पर हावी हो जाएगी, क्योंकि मैं तुमसे अलग हो जाऊंगी।
O king! I am unfortunate. In earlier bodies, I must have separated companions or separated a couple that was united.

O king! From today, I will lie on a bed of kuśa gras-s. I will give up all happiness and think only of seeing you.
हे राजा! आज से मैं कुश-ग्रास के बिस्तर पर लेटूंगा। मैं सारी खुशियाँ छोड़ दूँगा और सिर्फ तुम्हें देखने के बारे में सोचूँगा।
O tiger among men! Show yourself to me and make me happy. O lord of men! I am overcome with grief, miserable, unprotected and lamenting.
हे मनुष्यों में बाघ! अपने आप को मुझे दिखाओ और मुझे खुश करो। हे मनुष्यों के स्वामी! मैं शोक से ग्रस्त, दुखी, असुरक्षित और विलाप कर रहा हूं।

वह शव को गले लगाकर बार-बार विलाप करती रही। तभी एक अदृश्य आवाज़ ने उसे संबोधित किया।
O Bhadrā! O sweet-smiling one! Arise and leave. I will give you a boon. I will father offspring on you.
हे भद्र! हे मधुर-मुस्कुराने वाले! उठो और चले जाओ. मैं तुम्हें वरदान दूँगा. मैं तुझ से सन्तान उत्पन्न करूंगा।

O one with the beautiful hips! After you have bathed after your season, on the eighth or fourteenth lunar day, I will lie with you on your own bed.
हे सुन्दर नितंबों वाले! ऋतुकाल के बाद आठवें या चौदहवें चन्द्र दिवस पर जब तुम स्नान कर लोगे, तब मैं तुम्हारे साथ तुम्हारे बिस्तर पर लेटूँगा।

एवमुक्ता तु सा देवी तथा चक्रे पतिव्रता यथोक्तमेव तद्वाक्यं भद्रा पुत्रार्थिनी तदा
At these words, Queen Bhadrā, who was devoted to her husband and wished to obtain sons, did as she had been asked to do.

O lord of men! O supreme among those of the Bhārata lineage! The queen gave birth to sons through the corpse — the three Śālva-s and the four Madra-s.
हे मनुष्यों के स्वामी! हे भरतवंशियों में श्रेष्ठ! रानी ने शव से पुत्रों को जन्म दिया - तीन शाल्व और चार मद्र।
O bull of the Bhārata lineage! You too will be able to have sons on me, through the powers of yoga your mind possesses."
हे भरत वंश के बैल! तुम भी अपने मन की योगशक्ति से मेरे पुत्र उत्पन्न कर सकोगे।"
